In southern Colorado, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve offers one of the most dramatic landscapes in North America. Rising up to 750 feet, these dunes are the tallest on the continent, sculpted over time by the persistent forces of wind and water. Wetlands fed by Medano Creek support cottonwood trees and vibrant wildflowers. Grasslands stretch across the base of the dunes, while alpine forests and tundra thrive higher in elevation. This remarkable range of habitats sustains hundreds of species, from elk and black bears to the endemic Great Sand Dunes tiger beetle found nowhere else in the world.
